The Eighth- Ninth - Tenth Commandments Commands and Forbids

Eighth Commandment:

You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

Commands:

1.    That we speak the truth

2.    That we keep secrets we have promised to keep

Forbids:

1.    Lying 

2.    Being a false witness

3.    Perjury – lying under oath

4.    Judging others without sufficient evidence

5.    Gossiping about others

6.    Lying to destroy another’s reputation

7.    Praising sinful acts of another

8.    Self praise to the point lying

9.    Disclosing another’s faults without sufficient reason

Ninth Commandment:

“You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife.”

Commands:

1.    To be pure of heart

2.    Not to take pleasure in impure thoughts or desires

3.    That we dress and act in modesty

Forbids:

1.    Immodesty

2.    Speaking or dressing in suggestive manner that can lead others to sin

Tenth Commandment:

“You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods.”

Commands:

1.    That we put God above all earthly goods

2.    We not be envious of another’s goods  Forbids:1.   An immoderate desire to acquire the goods of another

2.     Wishing harm on another person because of our envy

The Seventh Commandment

Seventh Commandment   “You shall not steal.”

Commands:

1.    That we practice justice and charity in the administration of earthly goods and the fruits of human labor.

2.    That the goods of creation are for all people in common

3.    All have the right to own private property

 4.    We respect another’s property

5.    Reparation for property we steal

6.    We must respect everything that God has created

7.    Wealthy nations should help the poor ones

8.    Everyone has a responsibility to help the poor

9.    Everyone has a right to work 

Forbids:

1.    Stealing

2.    Fraud 3.    Deliberately damaging another’s property

4.    Not paying one’s just debts or obligations

5.    Failure to fulfill a promise/contract

6.    Not returning found or borrowed property

7.    Not giving a just days work to an employer

8.    Failure to pay a just wage for work

9.    Not helping the poor or those in need1

0.    Excessive Gambling

11.    Reducing people to slaves or for mere profit

The Sixth Commandment Commands and Forbids

Sixth Commandment:You shall not commit adultery.

Commands:

1.    To respect the sexual powers God gave us in when he created us.

2.    Our sexual powers should be placed at the service of life-giving love.

3.    We are to practice the virtue of chastity

4.    In marriage the sexual powers are the means of expressing profound, abiding, permanent, faithful, and fruitful love.

5.    Sexual intercourse is only valid in marriage between a man and a woman. Sex outside of marriage is a serious sin

6.    Those who have a homosexual orientation are called to exercise the virtue of chastity

7.    That we can regulate births through Natural Family Planning – This does not interfere with fertility and the intention is different than that of contraception   Forbids:1.    Adultery – having sex outside of marriage

2.    Fornication  - single persons having sex, this includes living together before marriage

3.    Masturbation – the deliberate stimulation of the sexual organs to derive pleasure.

4.    Contraception – using object or materials to avoid bring forth new life

5.    In vitro fertilization – (test –tube babies)

6.    Artificial insemination

7.    Surrogate motherhood

8.    Homosexual acts.

9.    Pornography – the displaying of intimate sexual acts to third parties

10.    It is a sin to make or offer pornographic materials

11.    It is a sin to use such materials for self-gratification

12.    Prostitution – Rape – Incest

13.    Polygamy – practice of having more than one spouse

The Fifth Commandment Commands and Forbids

Fifth Commandment“You shall not kill.”

Commands:

1.    That we respect each and every human being because they are made in the image and likeness of God.

 2.    Both government and we must do all we can to provide the fundamental necessities of life - food    clothing, shelter,          basic education, health care and employment for all human beings

3.    That scientific research or experiments not attack the dignity of human beings

4.    We are to promote peace5.    In war – non-combatants, the wounded and prisoners are to be treated humanely and respected6.    Never to deliberately take the life of any innocent person  

Forbids:

1.    Murder, anger, hatred and vengeance

2.    Abortion – the willful taking of the life of child in the womb

3.    Suicide – the taking of one’s own life

4.    Euthanasia – killing sick or dying persons to end their suffering

5.    Sterilization – purposely making the sexual powers of the body infertile

6.    Amputations – intentional act of amputating a part of the body from a living person without therapeutic medical reasons.

7.    Mutilation of one’s body or another’s 8.    Contraception – using artificial means to avoid conception.

9.    Torture – kidnapping – taking hostages – gluttony – drunkenness – abuse of drugs – selling drugs – reckless driving and     other way of endangering our own and others lives

10.    Scandal – leading other to sin by our example

11.    Seeking revenge  and holding grudges

The Third Commandment Commands and Forbids

Third Commandment

“Remember to keep holy the Lord’s Day.”

 Commands:1.    Catholics must participate in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass on all Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation2.    If a person is sick or it is impossible to go to Mass, one is excused.3.    Any baptized Catholic over the age of reason (7) who deliberately chooses not to attend Mass on Sunday or a Holy Day of Obligation commits a mortal sin.4.    The Sabbath is a day of rest. We are supposed to abstain from all unnecessary work5.    We should strengthen our family, cultural, social, and religious lives on this day.

The Second Commandment Commands and Forbids

Second Commandment:“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.”

Commands:

1.    We are to respect the name of God, Jesus Christ, Holy Spirit, and the names of the Blessed Virgin Mary and of the saints.

2.    We must keep promises we make in God’s name

3.    The name of every Christian is sacred; we are expected to respect the name of others. 

Forbids:

1.    Blasphemy – using an expression insulting to God or religion, examples: swearing in God’s name to cover up a crime, to  enslave other people, to torture people, to put people to death in God’s name

2.    Invoking God ‘s name as a witness to a falsehood (lie)

3.    Perjury – making a promise in God’s name without any intention of keeping the promise

4.    Cursing – using God’s name to wish harm to another

5.    Swearing – using God’s name needlessly for trivial matters.
